Everyone “had a go” in this land of opportunity and I desperately wanted a go myself. The moment school finished, I booked a ticket. The fellow next to me on the plane was called Bruce (I know, but true) a builder’s mate from New South Wales. He smoked a couple of packets of Marlboro Red and polished off 30 beers during the flight. I had a job with a cricket club in Bruce’s home town of Newcastle, two hours’ north of Sydney, playing at weekends and learning to tile and grout with Bruce during the week. It was a hoot.
